Sankofa: Go back to get it.
Sankofa is a word that comes from the Akan people of West Africa in what is now Ghana and Ivory Coast which is represented often with the Asante Adinkra symbol of a bird turning around to take an egg off of its back. Sankofa is how I approach my historical studies and how wandering around old buildings, graveyards and dusty archives always leads me to exactly where I'm standing.
Here are some bilingual blogs that help contextualize exactly how Afro-Rio history is, in fact, a contemporary event:
This blog is dedicated to unifying African descendants of the United States of America and the Federative Republic of Brazil. They are the two largest populations of African slave descendants in the Western Hemisphere and share a similar experience of racism, exploitation, exclusion and oppression. A lack of communication has always been a obstacle to the unification of these two groups. There is always more strength in unity than in division. This blog seeks to bridge the historic gap between these two communities. (While this blog had not been active since 2009, it has tons of stuff to click though in the archives.)
Black Women of Brazil is a photographic and informational blog featuring bios and interviews of a diverse array of Brazilian Women of African descent, as well as news and current events about Afro-Brazilians.
This blog features sharp and lively discussions in English and Portuguese addressing issues of race, gender, sex, sexuality and tourism, written by two Anthropologists, Ana Paula da Silva and Thaddeus Gregory Blanchette.
RioOnWatch is a community news forum which tracks issues related to the impact of policy on local residents with regards to preparations for World Cup and the Olympics. Remember that time an urban planning project proposed a highway expansion through a rich, white, gated community? Yeah, me neither. This site seeks to keep a finger on the pulse of exactly how Rio's economic boom is really effecting poor and working-class neighborhoods in anticipation of the Big Games.
